The small town of Manchester, IA is known for its trout hatchery, which has been in the area since the 1890s. But the town is also known for its several outdoor activities that are great for a Saturday family outing or a couples time on the lake or on the hiking trails. Check out the following areas that are popular sites to visit.

1. Manchester Whitewater Park

Bring out the kayaks, paddle boats, tubes, and picnic baskets, and enjoy the gorgeous Maquoketa River in the summer months. You can enter the water at any point in the river, and there’s a trail to walk back up to your starting point. Or continue down the river and organize a ride to pick you up. If you don’t have any equipment, just contact Avis Kayak Rentals. When you’ve exhausted yourself on the water, enjoy a picnic in the pavilion.
You can also visit in the wintertime and soak in the beauty of the snowy and icy waters. Be sure to bring a camera! The river is open 24/7 every day of the year. They are located at 300 W. Main St. and there is no admission fee.

2. Tirrill Park

This is a good spot for the whole family to simply hang out by the water and eat a picnic meal together. There are picnic tables, plus slides, swings, and a merry-go-round for the little ones, plus there are hiking trails. It’s also dog-friendly, and there’s a dog park. Bring the fishing gear too. There’s even a small music venue and a swimming pool. You’ll also find clean public restrooms.

Tirrill Park is located at 105 Stearns Dr. and they are open every day.

3. Riverfront Park & Gazebo

When the weather is beautiful, gather your family and friends and your inner tubes and enjoy a group trip down the river. We like to connect everyone’s inner tubes together with rope so we can all float the river while enjoying each other’s company. If you are tubing alone, we recommend wearing a life jacket as the rapids can get a bit intense.

There are also plenty of spots along the river to sit and listen to the sounds of nature. Be sure to bring your dog as well! You can also kayak here or enjoy the hiking trails. Riverfront Park is located at 302 S. 2nd St.
